ParticipantGreetings, all.
Running a main AFP/Open Directory/Portable Home Directory server on Mac OS X Server 10.5.8.
Lately, for some reason – clients on Mac OS X 10.6.3+ are seeing conflicts when background syncs occur with Microsoft Office documents. More specifically – if they have a open Microsoft Office document they are working on, the Finder on the client kicks up a sync error dialog box. Needless to say – that’s quite annoying for the users. Has anyone else seen this behavior at all?
Many thanks in advance,

Mike[/p]
MORE INFO:
everal separate networks. All 10.6.4-6 with clients in the same 10.6.4-6 range. Some networks have Mobile settings by user, some by machine and some by user group. In ALL cases, Preferences & Home sync are set to login/logout/manual NOT background. All of them getting hammered with sync errors while logged in. The sync errors are almost all word, excel and the like, files which are open and saving to a temp file.
I’ve tried enabling, disabling the background sync but to no avail. Is there a more powerful way to disable the sync check while users are logged in

ParticipantWell, in case anyone else google this, I hope my solution helps:
In WGM, select the User, Group or Computer Group that you are using to manage Mobile Home Folders.
Select Preferences at top, then Details
Double Click “Home Sync” (It should have an arrow next to if this user/group has Mobile Home Folders,
Click the triangle next to Always to see what rules are in place,
Select Always, Select New Key, Select the New Key then
Select Suppress Home Sync Errors from the menu, then set to TRUE
Apply, Done
Close WGM, log user in. Test by creating a new word/excel doc or opening itunes, give it 20 min(if your bkgrnd settings were never changed from the default integer) and examine client for sync errors.Cavaet: You won’t know if you’re clients are syncing without monitoring logs, workstations or Home folders.
Good luck!

ParticipantMy solution below did not work. The only thing that has helped has been extending the background sync time to very long. This affects Word, Excel, iTunes, Firefox, Chrome settings & temp files that are locked when open and does not affect all workstations but affects different workstations at different locations. I have not been able to identify any similarities in their configuration that is different from others. Any input is appreciated.
I believe you’ll find that they issues begin after the machines go to sleep, and only in the case of the new XML files (pptx docx xlsx). That is what I have found at least. I have been struggling with this issue at several sites and have yet to come up with a long term solution. I am hopeful about Lion, but I am skeptical.
