When my clients download updates from our software update server (10.4.9), they don’t get the full bandwidth according to the setting I have set in Server Admin. As an experiment, I have used a web browser on a client to manually download an update file and when I do that the download rate almost exactly matches the setting I made in Server Admin. I have tried changing the setting several times and each time the web browser’s download speed matches the setting. The Software Update app just pokes along at about 100-200 KBs regardless of the setting I make in Server Admin. I also know that the clients are, in fact, going to my local server for updates rather than going to Apple’s server because I can monitor the network traffic and processes on my server and see the activity of an update happening.
What am I doing wrong?
