    The Office of Information Resources and Technology (IRT) provides information technology, informatics, simulation and knowledge management services in support of the School of Medicine’s clinical, research and educational missions. Within IRT, The department of Education Technology provides a highly coordinated set of educational planning and support services to facilitate the innovative and appropriate use of teaching technology throughout the school. The Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge (http://lksc.stanford.edu/) will be opening in Spring 2010 and will bring together cutting-edge medicine, modern education and advanced technology.

    Reporting to the AV/IT Manager, the Educational Systems Administrator is responsible for the administration and support of the technology systems that support the educational mission of the School of Medicine under EdTech’s purview. These include an OSX server cluster, clustered file systems (Xsan), distributed computing cluster (Xgrid) and centralized services such as disk imaging that support the classroom computing and educational clinical computing environments. This position coordinates closely with the Core IT Service groups within IRT, including Data Center and Security, to ensure compliance with IRT best practices.

    Responsibilities

    SUPPORT FOR EDTECH ENTERPRISE SYSTEMS
    • Plan, manage and execute strategies for documentation, installation, configuration, maintenance, troubleshooting, evaluation and performance monitoring for all of the EdTech enterprise level systems including:
    • Podcast Producer Server
    • RAID storage
    • Xsan and Xgrid systems
    • Final Cut Server
    • Others as defined
    • Install and maintain operating systems, utilities, and application software on complex multi-vendor computing systems
    • Coordinate upgrades, system changes with appropriate IRT groups
    • Within IRT guidelines, make decisions regarding the setup, installation, and support of the systems, and communicate them effectively with appropriate users and groups
    • Develop and document proactive processes and policies regarding the support of EdTech enterprise systems
    SUPPORT FOR CLASSROOM COMPUTING SYSTEMS
    • Provide tier three support for all EdTech computing systems including:
    • encoding computers
    • podium computers
    • laptops
    • systems within SP spaces
    • computing labs
    • computer classroom
    • Advise on and coordinate appropriate decision making processes for upgrades and other technology changes
    • Develop and document proactive processes and policies regarding the support of EdTech classroom computing systems
    • Provide back-up classroom AV/IT support when needed

    PLANNING / PROJECT WORK
    • Provide support for pilot projects and test systems once installed.
    • Keep abreast of new technologies; attend training sessions.

    Qualifications

    Required:
    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required.
    • Minimum of five years related experience required.
    • Strong systems and server administration expertise with Mac OS X server and at least one of the following environments: Unix, Linux, Microsoft Windows system management, NFS, AFS, security issues (kerberos, etc).
    • Advanced knowledge of operating systems and in-depth experience in a mixed computing environment.
    • Experience and competence with one or more of the following: SAN technology (Xsan preferred), cluster technology (Xgrid preferred), large-scale NFS, and systems automation.
    • Proven ability to work within an enterprise datacenter and development environment.
    • Strong organizational skills and the proven ability to document systems and practices.
    • In-depth programming experience with UNIX shell scripting, PERL, stored procedures etc.
    • Experience using a high-level structured programming language.
    • Ability to learn new systems and programming languages.
    • Specific experience with TCP/IP networking environments, including experience with the purpose and use of standard TCP/IP tools such as Telnet, FTP, and ping.
    • High level of integrity and excellent judgment concerning privacy issues.
    • Demonstrated ability to work on large/complex system deployment projects in a team environment.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with ability to communicate complex technical issues to non-technical users.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, mature judgment, and diplomacy required to interact effectively with a broad spectrum of people, both individually and in groups.
    • Understanding of data center best practices and processes such as change management, the necessity of maintaining production, QA, pre-production and development environments and interactions with other IT groups and customers.

    Desired:
    • Experience in an academic environment providing support for large-scale, multi-vendor computer services.
    • Experience integrating and deploying open and active directory services within Mac OS X Server and Podcast Producer experience.
    • Experience with digital video systems and storage.
    • Experience in an ITIL environment or ITIL certification.
