Spamassissin, Tiger and learning

Since Tiger has spamassassin builtin, it has been helpful in filtering spam. However, it is not really good enough yet. What I cannot figure out is how it learns. Incoming email that is spam, goes to the receipients mailbox but if it is identified as spam how does that information get relayed to spamassassin? Is it incapable of learning when used the way Apple has implemented it or is there something else I need to do to get it to learn? TIA.
