This is a newly installed Quad G5, 1.5G of ram, 10.4.4 server. I have DNS, DHCP, and Open Directory running as a master. Nothing else is running.

When I hit the “Start Service” button in Server Admin with Software Update selected, I get this in my log file (and the service does not start).

Jan 25 17:04:12 EaseServer SystemStarter[282]: Could not create IPC bootstrap port: com.apple.SystemStarter

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try typing this into the terminal:

     sudo swupd graceful

    Also try

    swupdctl configtest

    what does it say?

Sorry to cut in, but the original poster appears to have dropped the conversation.

I’m having the exact same issue with the same error in the system.log. I’m able to start swupd from the command line with either the start or graceful commands but I can’t start it using Server Admin and the service doesn’t start automatically at bootup after starting and rebooting. swupdctl configtest says everything is a-ok.

    Thanks for any help,

    Mike

    Umm.

    Never mind.

I did a stupid thing – after the first time I had successfully started the Software Update Service I changed the server’s own Software Update prefs to point to itself to test… Clever. Will start getting treated for Alzheimer’s tomorrow.

Please enjoy a good laugh at my expense,
    Mike

    Hello,
I’m having similar problems, with the service not starting when I follow the directions above I get this in return:

swupd: could not open document config file /private/etc/swupd/swupd.conf

if anyone is still watching this thread help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

No I checked the directory where the file is supposed to be and with and using the command “ls -A” the file swupd.conf does not show up.

I don’t get too worked up over SUS not starting, sometimes it takes it a day (for me) to actually show as started.

I’m not sure if it’s downloading all the updates from Apple, because the default is set to mirror them.
