I am having a problem with a server running 10.4.7. After I have enabled Software Update server, clients who check against it say there are no new updates even though I know there are. If I check with Safari to see what updates are visible, they are all present, but clients do not show anything is available. If I fail back to Apple, everything works fine. The Software Update at the clients show my Server’s IP and the server says it have 122 updates mirrored and enabled. The logs show no errors and the clients get no errors when they check.
The only two things that bug me are…
1. This is not setup as an OD, just a standalone server and
2. Tiger was installed by upgrading a Panther Server Installation.
I am having the exact same problem, except with a clean install of 10.5.3 – both the machine and the OS are about a month old. SUS will offer updates to Leopard clients, but Tiger clients (after a very slow load) say there are no available updates.
This machine is not an OD member either – only netboot, AFP, swupd, and NFS (for netboot).
I had a different problem with the server which caused me to reinstall it. After that, everything started working again. I think the problem may be DNS and netinfo based. The server had changed IPs and I used changeip at command line to move it, but would often see errors in the logs relating to name resolution. After the reinstall, the errors went away and other services now work. I had never set-up DNS on this server, so it relied on netinfo. On my Leopard servers I have become anal on setting up correct names and DNS at first boot and have had few problems. I hope this helps,
