Software Update Server (Yet Again)

Having had no joy whatsoever since initially getting this running fine on 10.4.4, I tried again the other day. This time I still get a ludicrously slow connection over the LAN to the server, but after the progress bar gets about 1/3 of the way along on the updating client, it just stops.

Console reveals the “distribution file has failed”. Does anyone know what this means, or why it is happening? I’m not doing anything different to the first time I had this working.
