i am in the first steps of trying to install snow leopard server.
my old server was running 10.4.11 (tiger server) on powerpc hardware.
i want to put my new server temporarily on a macbook (probably will migrate later to mac pro).
as far as i understand, an “upgrade” is not a possibility for me, because my old system was powerpc. so that means if i want to carry over accounts and setting from my old server, i will need to transfer them.
anyway, i’ve read over the installation setup worksheet and i am in the early steps of running the installer. when i get to the point where it asks whether i want a new install or transfer, i select transfer. i attach the system drive from my old server to new machine. the drive appears in the list with a yellow triangle which means that it is not eligible for use as a source for transfer. the text at the bottom says “migration is not supported from servers which are configured to use dynamic network addresses. configure the source system to have a manual network address and try again.”
the problem is that my old system definitely was NOT configured to have a dynamic network address (i am assuming this means specifically that it had a set IP address and was not set to use DHCP). so this must be some kind of bug in the installer, at least in so much as the message it is giving me is wrong, or at least misleading.
anyone else seen this problem? anyone have any ideas?
i obviously passed on the last apple server upgrader/updater, so i’m trying to go from 10.4.x to 10.6, skipping 10.5. instructions say this should be possible – i hope i am missing something obvious, here and someone can fill me in.
