I’ve just recently setup snmp (v5.2.1) on an ODM running 10.4.7 Server and have asked our monitoring team to monitor drives/cpus and memory. They use Orion Enterprise 8.5.1(SP3) to do this.

Setup was a breeze using snmpconf and some help from Andrina, however, when Orion is set to monitor the Xserve, it rails the CPU to 99% and I have to ask them to pull the monitoring. Me polling the Xserve using snmpwalk spikes the CPU to 50% but it correctly drops back down once the polling is done.

A few months ago the thwack forums had a thread on this very issue, but it was happening on Windows 2003 servers too, and solarwinds provided a patch, which has been installed on our Orion server. The problem still persists on our Xserve.

Has anyone else had this experience and found a way out?

My apologies, it is in fact an old original G4 Xserve dual 1GHz. I have seen the reports of Intel 10.4 SNMP misery. There’s always one detail I forget to include.

I am currently looking at Leopard server which if word is to be believed has a better SNMP implementation, so I may hold off until then.
