I’m unable to change the smb role on the servers in our directory at the moment (except the directory server acting as a pdc). Every time I make the change on one of the servers I see an error on the directory server in the system.log file. On the server I’m trying to change the smb role there isn’t an error presented, it simply goes back to the role it had before. I also don’t see anything in the logs yet…

The directory server system.log error is below:
    Apr 28 10:41:53 directory servermgrd[93]: servermgr_smb: -[SCSMBConfigurationParser writeFile] kSMBPreferencesSyncTool
    Apr 28 10:41:54 directory servermgrd[93]: servermgr_smb: -[SCSMBConfigurationParser writeFile] kSMBPreferencesSyncTool error[1]

Any suggestions where to even start looking?

OK, so the error in the system.log was simply because we have uchg set on the /var/db/smb.conf file (to keep it from overwriting logon path = ). I had been setting that back to nouchg before trying to make the changes anyway…

Realized my last message may not have been entirely clear. I still can’t change the roll, just figured out what the one error message I saw was…

Well, I’d like to make our replica a BDC but the first machine I noticed the problem on I simply wanted to make one of our file servers a Domain Member. When I couldn’t do that I tried a couple other servers and found I couldn’t change those servers either.

    Hi,

Did you ever find a solution to this?

I am seeing the same problem under 10.6.5 with a 10.5.8 ODM. Strangely another fileserver configured last week has the role set just fine.

    Cheers
    Dan
