Show Floppys and Cds in simple finder

I have a lab of macs running 10.3.x with server 10.3.x, all the workstations are forced into simple finder. I am trying to make it so that when a student inserts a floppy disk or cd it would show on the desktop or somewhere. As of now I am only able to open files from the floppy or eject it via a program such as Word.

I have found 1 solution – I have an alias to the hidden “/Volumes” folder on the dock – this seems to work but am wondering if this is a security risk, the students can now see the contents of the hard disk. This is ok but not prefered.

I am trying to do this w/o going to the full finder, does anyone have any new ideas or any thoughs on my ideas?
