    I also tried one quick stab with the sharing CLI command, but no luck there either.

    Basically, this is a fresh install, all patched up, server (G4/400 GigE w/ 1.3GB RAM-this will get get upgraded the next time a machine is upgraded, luckily) to serve a handfule of people. I have full network connectivity from this machine (it runs backups of various network folders through Synchronize Pro without a problem, updates, etc.). I have set up DNS, AFP, Print, Web and Mail services. I haven’t populated any users beyond the first in the LDAP directory yet, so right now I have just my Admin, diradmin, and test user on the machine at all (admin being a local-only account). DNS is set up correctly (forward and reverse lookups both refer to each other, all other lookups perform as expected). I don’t see anything in particular in the logs-this is the complete log file:

    !!Log File Created On: 3/4/2006 14:34:24 62:6:0 GMT
    04/Mar/2006:14:37:26 -0500: AFP/Appletalk listener not enabled because AppleTalk is off.
    04/Mar/2006:14:37:26 -0500: AFP/Appletalk listener not enabled because AppleTalk is off.
    04/Mar/2006:16:55:48 -0500: Server shut down.

    I also have a message that jabberd is shut down because of too many failures- I’ve now turned off iChat services since I don’t really need them (just thought it would be better than Rendezvous/Bonjour chat).

    Here’s the log from the last boot-I’m getting a little bleary eyed and maybe I’m missing something:

    I am logged in as the local Administrator account (“Authenticated as administrator to local directory: /NetInfo/DefaultLocalNode”).

    Also, when I su – root (just trying to be as uberprivileged as possible so it should work) and tried to create a new sharepoint using sharing -a /Volumes/Drive2/Shared I got nothing new when I followed it with a sharing -l. Not sure why that wouldn’t work, except it seems like the whole sharing infrastructure is pretty borked. More than a little frustrating since is the part that usually takes the least effort.

    Appletalk is currently turned on in the Network preference pane. I can turn it off, but preferred to leave it on for the OS9 machines.

    Any ideas on where else to look?

    I seem to remember something about an entry missing in the /etc/hostconfig file that would make the sharing tab be greyed out.

    Check and make sure that the “HOSTNAME=” entry is filled out. I can’t try this right now to test it. If it is there, post your /etc/hostconfig file remvoing company name, etc and I’ll cross reference it.

    I know I’ve seen this before, I just hope I’m barking up the right tree.

    Regards,
    Z

    I’m glad to find someone who has seen it before. Here’s the file-should the HOSTNAME line read HOSTNAME=-SERVER- or does it need the FQDN instead (the machine hosts its own DNS-being behind a NAT-but resolves itself properly)?:

    AFPSERVER=-YES-
    AUTHSERVER=-NO-
    AUTOMOUNT=-YES-
    CUPS=-AUTOMATIC-
    NFSLOCKS=-AUTOMATIC-
    NISDOMAIN=-NO-
    TIMESYNC=-YES-
    QTSSWEBADMIN=-NO-
    WEBSERVER=-YES-
    SMBSERVER=-NO-
    SNMPSERVER=-NO-
    SPOTLIGHT=-YES-
    QTSSRUNSERVER=-NO-
    TIMESERV=-YES-
    WEBPERFCACHESERVER=-YES-

    ARDAGENT=-YES-
    SOFTWAREUPDATESERVER=-YES-
    HOSTNAME=-AUTOMATIC-
    IPFILTER=-NO-
    LDAPSERVER=-YES-

    Okay- I found out that logging into localhost works fine- its just using the DNS name that doesn’t work. So while I’m certainly not an expert it does seem to point to some sort of hostname/DNS/naming issue.
