Shared printing across subnets (or lack therof)

Ok, so i’m stuck. I just upgraded to a super fast, gig to the desktop, bla bla bla subnetted network from a slow, flat, class c. Now, when i try to force printer lists or even look for shared printers, i can’t see them unless i plug directly into the server subnet. is this because OS X servers uses TCP port 631 for print sharing? is it not routeable between subnets? i’ve cleared mcx caches and all that… anyone have any suggestions or a similar setup? students are back in a couple of days and my seat is getting warmer by the minute. I should add that I’m trying this across vlans.
