ParticipantHi,
is there a way to share the built-in fax modem on OS X Tiger Server ?
In the client version of Tiger there are buttons for printer&fax network sharing in the system preferences. I really miss this feature in Tiger Server!Because the fax modem is no postscript printer i can´t add it in the print Server queue (in Server Admin).
Maybe it´s possible to share the fax modem via CUPS. Does anyone has an idea? I can see it on the Cups Site at least. How can i add it to CUPS or the Printserver queue?
How can I share the modem on the network using Tiger Server?
Can the fax server be promoted via Bonjour for the clients ?
If it´s then not possible to add the fax modem on the Client Workstations using Bonjour, how can i add it on the client in the print center as a generic printer/modem?Best regards

I’m on Mac OS X 10.4.7 and I found that usually the built-in fax modem of Mac OS X Server is shared with the clients in the network without changing any default settings but sometimes it disappears. I suspect this is related to the name change we made in
Printer Setup Utility.app –> View –> Show Fax List –> Info on Internal Modem.
We changed the default name from “Internal Modem” to simply “Fax”.However, the base problem is still here, how can we turn on and off the sharing of the built-in intenal modem for faxing with Mac OS X Server 10.4.x?

I usually just transform temporarily my server as a basic Mac OS X box 🙂
Do this :
sudo mv /System/Library/CoreServices/ServerVersion.plist /System/Library/CoreServices/ServerVersion.plist.backup
Then logout : you’ll see that you server now displays “Mac OS X” on the login window.
Log in again, then just run in Print & Fax System Preferences and switch on the Sharing feature, without forgetting to check the “allow other users to send faxes through this computer fax” checkbox.
Logout again, then type
sudo mv /System/Library/CoreServices/ServerVersion.plist.backup /System/Library/CoreServices/ServerVersion.plist
Logout, and you have Mac OS X Server again…
It is magic, indeed 🙂

ParticipantThanks Guillaume,
I tried your trick.
It’s indeed magic, it works as you described but I cannot confirm the fix right now because at the moment the server’s internal modem appears shared.
However, I noticed the “allow other users to send faxes through this computer fax” checkbox was unchecked even if the fax WAS visible on the network… -
