I’ve set up OD to allow single signon, mainly for AFP shares, which is working OK. My problem is this,

Server01 has 3 AFP shares (Share1, Share2, Share3). I log into Server01 and mount all 3 shares on the desktop. I then create aliases of each of the 3 server volumes locally. I unmount the 3 server volumes. I then double click the alias for Share1 which should mount Share1 back on the desktop, which it does. I then doubleclick the alias for Share2 which should mount Share2 back on the desktop, which it does not. Instead the window for Share1 opens. Oddly, if I unmount everthing and start over and then double click the alias for Share2, Share2 mounts as it should. If I then double click the alias for Share1, the window for Share2 opens. Meanwhile, the alias for Share3 works as it should always.

Although the aliases for Share1 and Share2 were created from their respective server volumes, they end up pointing to the same place. This behavior is repeatable on every machine I’ve tried so far. The server is 10.3.5 Server and the desktops are all 10.3.5 also.

I tried unsharing the 2 problematic volumes, resharing them, and then creating new aliases for each but it didn’t make a difference. I should also note that this beavior happens on the client regardless of if I log into the server with Kerberos credentials or standard AFP credentials. It seems to be something server related but I’m not sure where to look.

    Any similar experiences or suggestions?

    Thanks

I can answer my own question.

While I still don’t know why the aliases are behaving this way, there is a simple way around it.

It turns out that location files can be used to accomplish the same thing as aliases in this case. They seem to work just fine. The location file just needs to have the specific volume you want to mount included in the URL. For example:

    afp://server01/share1

Thanks to Apple tech support for that one.
