search on server slow

I have a server (10.4.10 on first generation G5 xserve), running AFP service and tomcat. The problem is that it is painfully slow to search on the from clients (G5s and mac pro’s running 10.4 x) – it usually takes around 2 minutes to search on it. There’s only around 1 TB of data on it, and gigabit network.
Does anyone have ideas on what to do in order to make the search faster?
