Replacing niload with ds* more specific questions

While looking at what sort of user record the wkstn GUI gives you I find there are several fields created with empty values.

_shadow_passwd: 
sharedDir: 
AuthenticationHint: 

The dscl manpage says “NOTE – Not all directory nodes support a property without a value” which is the case here. Does anyone have any idea how to handle these empty fields?
