    Hello

Xserve 10.3.9 booted from Tiger Server install CD disk 1. Server Assistant running on a 10.4.2 iMacG5. Will not accept first 8 digits of serial number. I’m logged in as root on the iMacG5, I have R/W access to ServerSetup in /System/Library, I can ping the IP of the server given in Server Assistant (correct hardware address) and I am using the Xserve’s built in enthernet connection.

I’m at the misery stage – and I’ve got to upgrade this server, test log-ins, build master desktop images, transfer them to the server then net-install 60 macs for 1.5 weeks time.

    Frown

    please help … cheers

Have you been through the guide?

Some general things to watch out for…
    Password is case sensitive
Make sure you’re using the Tiger admin tools
Can you ssh into the Xserve?
    Have you tried 12345678?

To answer the above – I’ve tried everything and no I haven’t replaced the logic board.

I’m hooking up the xserve via FireWire to an iMacG5 to use the DVD upgrade/install option. I want to keep all users/passwords and paths to network homes stored on shared volumes. I have made a NetRestore image of the 10.3.9 server (to rollback to) and installed this on a test iMacG5. I then upgraded that to 10.4 and archived the OD. I just don’t know how to link the users to their homes (seperate volume) on the server if I clean install 10.4 and import from the archive.

The 8-digit serial-password problem has thrown me.

I should add the FW target method is my plan B – the password problem was when I was installing remotely using 10.4 Server Assistant and the 10.4 Server CDs in the Xserve

I have used the whole serial number and had it work with 10.3.9… Give that a shot.

Thanks for the replies. I backed up 10.3.9 with a NetRestore-made image which I was able to install onto a test iMacG5. Updating that to 10.4 went OK, so I archived the database using WGM 10.4 and clean-installed the Xserve with 10.4. Used the AFP548 Tiger set-up guide and re-enabled my home-folder share points. Imported the archive and bingo !

I have a DNS question posted in the DNS section but it’s just a simple query

    cheers

    PS

I did the 10.4 clean-install with FW target mode on an iMacG5 with the Xserve hooked to it. I never did pursue the password problem, but I know at the time our network techs had reduced the speed of the switches linking me to the network because of problems. When I clean-installed the server I was down in our server area plugged into the core switch. Maybe screwy connections hampered the 8-digit authorisation ??
