ParticipantHi,
I am getting a strange problem with OS X Server 10.4.6, running on a G4 Xserve 1Ghz.
When working on files in Microsoft Word X and 2004 after having the file open for a few minutes if you try and save we get an error “Word failed reading from this file”, or “Bad network connection”.
Also in Quark 6.52 and Quark 6.1 when trying to save a file to the server we get “File not found [-43]”. It is possible to open files, and it is also possible to move files onto the share using finder without any problems. To work on documents we are having to work on them locally on the desktop then copy across once done.
The only thing that i can think has changed is the power went off last night, which casued the Xserve to restart. These problems are occuring across all client computers so i am assuming it can only be a problem with the server.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be, or any tests that i can do to detmine what is up with it
Many Thanks

ParticipantI am assuming you are not running word and quark on the actual server, but running them on a client which is connected to the server via an afp share point or home folder which the files being worked exist??
If so, I would apply the 10.4.7 update on the server (and probably the client as well) which fixes a few issues with the AFP server, and may resolve the issues your are experiencing.

It is an afp share point, logging on as guest.
I have now updated the server and clients to 10.4.7, no change in the problem.
You could crank the AFP logging up on a client and try to see what is failing.
Sounds like a great idea, could i ask how or where to find out how to do this. I found the following article https://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=20060329213629494&mode=print, but my knowledge of OS X is not good enough to figure this out.

We just started getting that same error on our 10.4.7 server in the past 2 weeks. The news item refered to does NOT fix the problem, we’ve never used shared passwords on our server, and we haven’t changed any server (or client) settings in the timeframe, except running a security patch on the server.
