I’m creating a new 10.4 version of our old 10.3 server and while I’m not crazy about the set-up of the old server I’m striving for seamless user experience in the transition and I don’t want to rearrange any of the departments. We are a mostly Mac shop and everything is great on the AFP side but the Windows users cannot log into the new box under any circumstances. I am also unable to authenticate via SMB from the Mac clients as well.

The 10.3 box was running Open Directory but the vast majority if the passwords were shadowed and I was planning on doing the same thing but so far I’m having little success. What should be necessary besides creating user accounts (with shadowed passwords and home folders created), sharing the appropriate folders and starting Windows services?

Do I need to have local DNS running? (We are served by a robust DNS system and local computers are pointed at it.)
Do I have to be Domain Master Browser? I have Workgroup and WINS running.

Apple really seems to be pushing towards OD in 10.4 (which I understand) but every reference says "file services" should be available to Windows with shadowed passwords. I’m afraid that running OD would necessitate rearranging my users home folders into a new way that will make them unhappy.

    All help appreciated,

Seems one more Window Services stop and restart was all it took. I’m not sure why that one suddenly took and others hadn’t but… it works now.

    yeah.
