I got this email, and thought that I would post it here to answer, so that others could chime in:
I’m using the version of InstaDMG that has chroot in it, 1.4b4.
That number is not real helpful, as a lot of things were labeled 1.4b4. Rather the rev. number would tell me what version you are on. And since you didn’t say 1.5, I know it is something other than the latest. Really the SVN HEAD revision is generally the best one to use.
I am trying to make an image and my base updates are as follows in this
order:

QuickTime 7.6.2
AirPort Utility 5.4.2
AirPort Utility Leopard 5.3.2
Remote Desktop Client 3.2.2
iTunes 8.2.0
Mac OS X 10.5.7
FrontRowUpdate 2.1.7
Safari 4.0.2
iLifeSupport 9.0.3
Java For Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4
HewlettPackerDrivers
iLife Media Browser 2.0

It doesn’t look like anything after the OS update is applied. I put
the OS update in the middle because all the updates following the OS
update do not appear unless you update to 10.5.7. Do you have any
ideas?
First off… I can sees a few problems:

– The latest Combo update should always be your first entry. I would put the printer drivers right there too, but it probably does not matter.
– I know that “Java For Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4” requires the update before it
– If you look around the forums a bit you will learn that the iLifeSupport updates trigger a bug in the installer. It will look only at the booted volume and if the update is installed there it won’t install. Unfortunately I have not come up with a way around it.

If you look at the vanilla.catalog file, it is constructed by walking through the manual install process, then ordering the things that way.

And could you try to be specific about what you are seeing?
