postfix, sasl and outlook express

hello

i have postfix, uw pop/imap, sasl and ssl configured on mac os x 10.3 client

apple’s mail app works fine but outlook express (mac os 9) can not send mail using the postfix server.

outlook will not authenticate either with ssl turned on or off.
it seems like the smtp authentication is not compatible with outlook express.

since most of the world uses outlook express i know there is an answer out there.

any suggestions?

is there a way to make postfix advertise plain authentication with ssl so outlook will work?

am i on the right track?
