    Hey all,

Recent networking issues at my clients have led me to become interested in how to use packet sniffing to diagnose network problems. I’ve toyed with tcpdump, and ethereal looks neat, but although I could mesmerize myself with the contents of tcp streams all night, I really don’t know how to begin to use these tools to actually solve issues. Anybody have suggestions on where to begin?

For example, one of my clients has a machine which recently just started dropping off the network. All IP transactions just kinda died. Since she’s using a static IP, I ruled out all the DHCP bugs in OSX. But beyond that, I don’t know how to use packet analyzers to examine the problem, nor even whether those are the correct tools for the job.

    Thanks!
