Hi,

I have a 10.4.2 server. I can use Thunderbird and Mail.app to send using plain password auth on SMTP. Outlook 2003 sends and then receives a message in the inbox saying 554 Relay Access Denied.

The Outlook client is in the local lan.

Here’s the mail server config:

command_directory = /usr/sbin
config_directory = /etc/postfix
content_filter = smtp-amavis:[127.0.0.1]:10024
daemon_directory = /usr/libexec/postfix
debug_peer_level = 2
enable_server_options = yes
html_directory = no
inet_interfaces = all
mail_owner = postfix
mailbox_size_limit = 0
mailbox_transport = cyrus
mailq_path = /usr/bin/mailq
manpage_directory = /usr/share/man
mydomain = woodscharter.org
mydomain_fallback = localhost
myhostname = woodscharter.org
mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8
mynetworks_style = host
newaliases_path = /usr/bin/newaliases
queue_directory = /private/var/spool/postfix
readme_directory = /usr/share/doc/postfix
sample_directory = /usr/share/doc/postfix/examples
sendmail_path = /usr/sbin/sendmail
setgid_group = postdrop
smtpd_pw_server_security_options = plain
smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_sasl_authenticated,permit_mynetworks,reject_unauth_destination,permit
smtpd_sasl_auth_enable = yes
smtpd_tls_key_file =
smtpd_use_pw_server = yes
unknown_local_recipient_reject_code = 550
virtual_mailbox_domains = hash:/etc/postfix/virtual_domains
virtual_transport = lmtp:unix:/var/imap/socket/lmtp

— addendum. thunderbird isn’t doing it either. just apple’s mail.app works. the thunderbird user was using a different smtp that isn’t in our control.

Unconcerned about the malformed hotmail address, someone typed in a comma.

The authentication problem is what’s killing me. This is PLAIN smtp auth on the server. on the clients (apple mail.app and evolution on linux work) the authentication is set to password or PLAIN (evolution.) In outlook, it’s set to use the same information for recieving email. In thunderbird on windows, it’s set to use authentication, and ssl is not marked.

Seemed to have sorted it out. turned on LOGIN as well as PLAIN for smtp auth and things started to work.

Today my brother told me about an interesting tool,as he said,the tool solved a problem with corrupted mails in his MS Outlook for seconds and absolutely free – how to split and recover the data from pst file. At first I didn’t remember,but some hours ago I used it and the tool restored all my old damaged emails. I am very glad to work with the nice tool.
