Just out of curiosity, has anyone tested InstaDMG with OS X Server builds? I don’t recall seeing any specific references to OS X Server.

There was a side project to get InstaDMG to be able to build MacOS X Server images, but I don’t remember there being a final product in that direction. As the person doing most of the main-line work right now I will say that I don’t have any need of it, so probably will not put any time into that directly. I am very open to patches to support it though.

Thanks for the response. My only requirement at this point is to merge the 10.5.7 update. My current installer is 10.5 and won’t work on my test system. Perhaps I can extract enough information out of the existing instadmg.bash script to accomplish this. I’ve done a lot of packaging, but I’ve never tried merging OS X updates.

    Two notes:

    – My understanding is that there are some odd corners to the MacOS X Server installer, especially when it comes to the licensing part. I have never explored this myself, so can’t say for certain.

    – The old project to make a version of InstaDMG work with ‘Server can be found here:

    – InstaDMG does not work by merging updates. It works by installing everything to a dmg, then ASR scanning the resulting image so that it can be rapidly imaged onto a target computer (about 10 minutes, more or less). The installer never runs on the target machines, and I am not sure that this is going to work with ‘Server (but have not explored much).

It works fine, all my servers are deployed with InstaDMG built images.

    Trondah,

What are you using to create your server images, the stock InstaDMG with the -s flag, or the InstaDMG_server that larkhost is referencing?

    Thanks,
    Rich

I should note that the ‘-s’ flag on the normal version does nothing at this point (as is indicated in the -h output).

I went through the same steps as InstaDMG uses to make a server install

    I used the stock InstaDMG.

If InstaDMG doesn’t work out, you can always do the actual install of OSX server on an external drive, and then image the drive before it’s booted. That way you can tailor the install process and know that the image is 100%.
