OK… here is the situation: I have a 10.3.9 server running as Open Directory Master. So far, all of the clients have been 10.3.x with no problem. However, after getting some new iMac G5’s that were shipped with 10.4, I ran into a problem.

When you bind the 10.4 client to the 10.3.9 server, everything appears to be working properly except for one thing… when you force the preference in Workgroup Manager to show network users on the login window, the users do not show up. This is very important because we are doing this setup for an elementary school. The kids’ shortnames consist of their last name and 8 unique numbers, so it would be almost impossible for the kids to remember such a long number. This was no problem with the 10.3.9 clients, as the list shows up right after you bind the client and reboot. I have tried Mike Bombich’s loginWindow Manager, but no luck. I have tried copying the com.apple.loginwindow.plist from a 10.3.9 client to this client with no luck. It is binding properly (at least I think) because I can log in with Other and type the shortnames of the users and the automounts are working. I have double and triple checked the settings in Workgroup Manager, checking the MAC address in the computer list, forcing the Login preference to show a list of all network users, as well as the settings in Directory Access (binding to LDAP and Authentication to the server)

If anyone knows of anything I can do, I would very much appreciate the help.

    Thanks,
    Chris

I’ve had a bunch of similar problems, although I had bigger ones so I put this one on the back burner. I didn’t get any of my problems solved, I think at this point we are stuck waiting for some updates from Apple for 10.4.x and hopefully this solves the problems. My mobile users can’t login when they are not on the network (eeeek). Thank goodness I only have one laptop user stuck on Tiger right now ….
