    Hi there,

Hopefully someone out there can help me with this. I’m installing a new xserve into a publishing company, and in attempting to establish the server as a PDC, the interface gives me the very unhelpful message:

Error while writing settings (Cannot make the server a Windows primary domain controller)

Originally I got an error in /var/log/samba/log.nmbd that said it couldn’t open /private/etc/lmhosts – so I touched that file in there and that went away.

Other than that the log.nmdb gives no clues, and seems to just go through, but the server just defaults back to being standalone.

However over in /var/log/system.log I get:

    servermgrd: servermgr_smb: opendirectorypdbconfig error [238]
    servermgrd:servermgr_smb: opendirectorypdbconfig stdout: [opendirectorypdbconfig error(-14098)\n]

Anyone know what’s going on here?

    Thanks

    Howdy!

First thing I need to say if ppl solve problems write the sollution and not “I solved it, Thanks!”
Mac ppl seems to suck at that!

Found 2 different sollutions to that problem depending on what you are doing.
One person solved it by changing the computername to a shorter than 15 chars

I solved it by using root instead of admin when you get the question to type the
    admin user/pass.

    Hope it help

For me the problem was I was using the default admin account, not an account in the Open Directory that had admin privileges.
