I’m having problems with Managed Mobile users on a clean install of 10.4 server (recently upgraded to 10.4.3 with s/w update). The server is an Open Directory Master running DNS for the network. Forward and reverse lookups are correct for all relevant hosts. The majority of the users and groups were exported from the previous (10.3) server and imported with passwords re-entered manually.

The users were that imported function normally (including using Managed Mobile accounts, no file sync just info). New users created on this server have problems with Managed Mobile accounts. When they login they are given ’99’ home directories (which from what I understand is ‘unknown’).

In the Open Directory Overview window all services (lookupd etc) are showing as running except NetInfo Server which is showing ‘Local only’. Is this normal for an OD Master? Does anyone have any tips on reproducing 10.3’s Managed, Mobile functionality without file sync (e.g. just account info)?

    TIA

    Tim

Yes, NetInfo running locally is pretty normal here.

Try using dscl to read out the LDAP user info from a user that works and a user that doesn’t work. Something could pop out if you compare the records.

Thanks for that tip, I found the critical difference was:

    com.apple.cachedaccounts.CreatePHDAtLogin

Users created under Tiger had this property set whereas the imported users did not. I removed this item for a test user in the Preferences – Details pane and voila! I’m guessing making this change is only recommended if you want true, local-only homes with no syncing.

    Thanks again

    Tim
