Open Directory Assistant security list is blank

I am configuring OS X Server 10.2.8 and trying to resolve a samba SMB login issue for a windows machine. Windows box can’t log in even though we have the SMB and sharepoint set up. Reading up, we see that we may need to turn on password authentication, but using the Open Directory Assistant, when we try to follow instructions like found at http://www.faqs.org/docs/samba/appf.html , we get a blan k list of protocols to enable. Help! This login worked just last week, and now it doesn’t. Ug.
