OD and Replicas

I have not done this before and had a couple of questions well at least one. I have an open directory master and another server, I now want to make the other server a replica, will the replication process overwrite all the data on the secondary server or does it “add” the data to the server? Also can the replica run other services that the master is not running or is it strictly a replica? Any help wpuld be great.
