We’re trying to setup an XServer running 10.3.4 to act as a central server for authentication and user Home directories. We currently accomplish the same thing via an old HP box with NIS, but it desperatly needs to be replaced. AFter several days of pain and sweat the XServe is acting as an Open Directory Master and authenticates and shares out home directories to our labs OS X and Windows boxes. The problem now arrises that we also need to get it working for our Linux and IRIX boxes. After a lot more pain and sweat I have some Linux boxes that authenticate off of the LDAP domain, but they will not mount the user home directories. We always receive an error that the path is not available. We are using NFS shares (due to not being comfortable trying to get IRIX talking AFP) and can’t seem to figure out how to get the Linux boxes to automount home directories. Anyone out there who can help with this issue?
I have a question more than an answer…how did you get your Windows clients to authenicate to your OD? Are you using AD? if not please share your setup, we are looking to do this at our school but can’t seem to get around needing an AD for the windows clients.
@Labratter: I have been running Windows clients with network homes on my 10.4 server by setting the server up as the PDC in the Windows service options in Server Admin.
Hope that helps.
@Anonymous: Could you let me know how you got your linux PCs to authenticate to the OSX server? Also what flavour of linux is it. I’m currently failing to get Ubuntu PCs bound to Open Directory. Did you do anything special to the server or just the clients? The more info you could give me the better. And sorry for hijacking your post.
