    I used the CDs to install 10.4 (Server) onto a machine. I give it a static address on my LAN and point to a valid external DNS server. I do no configuration on the server yet, as I’d prefer to run the updates first, and then set up the DNS before doing anything else. All other machines on the network work just fine.

    When I log in I then start up the Software Update panel and try to pull some updates. Instead I get a time out error (timed out -1001). Safari is unable to browse. However, I can ping by name, and I can connect to another server by DNS name.

    the Console gives the following info:

     2006-01-16 12:24:12.502 Software Update[319] loader:didFailWithError:NSError "timed out"
    Domain=NSURLErrorDomain Code=-1001 UserInfo={
       NSErrorFailingURLKey = http://swscan.apple.com/content/catalogs/index-1.sucatalog;
       NSErrorFailingURLStringKey = "http://swscan.apple.com/content/catalogs/index-1.sucatalog";
       NSLocalizedDescription = "timed out";
    }

    Also in there system.log:

    MAVServer launchd: Server 278f in bootstrap 1103 uid 0: "/usr/sbin/lookupd"[97]: exited abnormally: Hangup"

    Lookupd does startup a second later though.

    Permission and disk repairs come through with no issues.

    This has happened on two seperate machines using two seperate hard drives (one G4-400 Sawtooth, one G4-400 DA).

    Aha- (this is embarassing)- it was a misconfigured firewall- for some reason the range I was setting my server up in had most of the ports blocked. Now to track down the firewall admin….
