    Xserve Tiger server 10.4.5

There’s a few posts about this on Apple’s forums but nothing conclusive/clear – I can no longer create a home folder for a new user either at a) first login or b) using ‘Create Home Now’ option in WGM

    I can tell you this:

FQDN reverse lookup is fine and always has been since installation (DNS from our Windows PDC server)
Sharepoints configured correctly and existing home folders OK
AFP guest access enabled for AFP/sharepoints
ACLs enabled on both home folder storage volumes and using ACEs for one shared folder only, not homes. ACL managed shared folder lives in different directory to home folders. ACLs were a recent setup but I have successfully created new users with network home folders since then. Normally a new user’s folder is created at first login, to avoid creating homes for accounts that end up never used.

I want to begin testing Mobile Homes so I intitially tried a new user in an existing sharepoint, could not creat home as described. Repaired permissions and tried ‘createhomedir’. I then set up a new home folder directory share specifically for this test user, still no home folder creation.

    Any help/ideas much appreciated, thanks

    1. OK
    2. OK
    3. OK

I tried createhomedir -a and got a message (for each user in the home folder directory of one of the two volumes) like this:

    2006-03-21 08:49:15.584 DirectoryTools[21691] copyDirectory(Non-Localizable, /Network/Servers/ourserverFQDN/Volumes/ART2/intake2005/lynseyneill) failed with 1
    created (/Network/Servers/ourserverFQDN/Volumes/ART2/intake2005/lynseyneill

ART2/intake2005 is the Volume/Directoy in which I can’t create a home for the newest user ‘Mobile Test’ – this user did not appear in the result of createhomedir -a. I got no messages about my other volume ‘ART’.

Which logs could I check for errors?

    thanks

Same thing just happened to me today. I have six servers all connected to a Directory Server. There was one user who I could not create a Home folder. It turns out that he also had an local account on the server where I was hosting the Home Folders. I deleted the local account and I was able to create the Home Folder.

    OK

I fixed an AFP problem with a shared folder that was being mounted at login via WGM Login prefs.

Yesterday morning no-one could login – or it was very slow and system.log showed a repeating ‘Filename to long: 63’ error. I un-shared the directory, changed the name, re-shared it, restarted server/clients. No more errors, and I can now create a home folder for the user.

Phew. Now I can begin testing mobile homes w/ ~/Library synching and get into a whole new area of madness.

    Thanks all.
