ParticipantI’m trying to setup an Xserve to replace what is on an old G4. I opted to start from scratch than to CCC the drive.
The G4 has one hard drive and everything is on there. The Xserve has 3 hard drives
system – for the OS
myusers – which is where I would like to store the networked home directories
filestore – this will store files for the companyI have myusers set to automount, I have AFP guest access on. I have guest access on in AFP in Server Settings. I’ve setup Directory Access on the clients just like I have on the G4 that has been working perfectly for over a year.
I’ve format and started from scratch now 3 times and I’m having the same problem trying to setup network home dirs. If I login as an admin or regular user on any mac I get this error at the login window. I am able to change passwords if I set the user to change at next login. Also the home dir structure gets created where it should

You are not able to log into this computer.
Contact your system administrator for help.
————————————————————-So after I contacted myself I didn’t have an answer. I’ve gotten this in the past but only when I setup Computer Lists to allow only certain users on a particular Mac. I have no computer lists and I still get this error whether I have Guest Computers set to inherit or define. If I make a computer list and I’ve tried with 3 different Macs I still get the same error.
What the h3ll am I doing wrong?

ParticipantI flushed the caches with Cocktail. I’m not sure if that is the right ones.
Hold option/apple/control did nothing. I know the Refresh Preferences screen you are talking about though. All my admins on network home folders get them. It says something about Workgroup Management at the top.

ParticipantI just setup Panther Server on a different Mac with a different IP. I’m using LDAP instead of NetInfo this time.
Same crap! I takes the username and password but I get cannot log into this computer.
hmmm…so something wierd is going on with the clients I guess.

ParticipantI restored a partition using Panther. I was able to log in!
So what am I going to do for all the I currently have?
I tried to delete these caches
/Library/Caches
/System/Library/Caches
~/Library/Cachesand these Preferences
/Library/Preferences
~/Library/Preferencesand still I’m not able to log in.
If I give the Xserve the same IP as the G4 do you think I’ll have this problem?

Participantwe had the same problem – also had “your home folder cannot be found in the usual place” error message – we just deleted the mcx_cache entries in netinfo databases on workstation and server and that solved the problem. give that a go.

ParticipantDeleted the mcx_cache in NetInfo solved the problem.
It still bothers me that I wasted 2 days trying to figure this out. I though cache was just supposed to be temporary.

ParticipantI’m having the same issue right now. Where does one find the mcx_cache? I did a search on the XServ and didn’t see it.
Thanks for your help,
