Due to our problems with our MCX settings not sticking to our Tiger clients from our Leopard server, we want to go back to Tiger server for now.

    But here’s the problem.

Our new Xserve came with Leopard server on it, when we boot from the Tiger Server install DVD no Hard drives show up to install too!?! Neither do they show up in the Disk Utility?

If we boot from the Leopard DVD they show up fine, but we want to revert back to Tiger server!

We tried creating a partition, rebooting to the Tiger DVD again but still none show up.

Is it not possible to install another OS over Leopard on an Xserve?

    Any ideas gratefuly appreciated!

    I had this issue,
The problem is that your DVD is missing the kext need to support the drives/controllers.
The good news is that one of the combo updates has the kext. I assume here that you have a copy of 10.4 Server Universal, and your XServe is not so new that you are locked out of running 10.4 completely.

    Boot with the your DVD.
    Install to external drive (firewire).
Boot to 10.4 on the external drive, and run software update.
Reboot, and your internal drives show up.

You can now make an image of the system, update architecture on your NetRestore .nbi/netboot set, and/or clone the system over to the internal drives using CCC.

Thank you for your advise Eden. Went on similar lines and it worked a treat!

For those who have a similar problem…

I used SuperDuper to create a bootable clone on the original Tiger server to an external USB HD drive (we don’t have a firewire).

I then plugged this bootable USB HD in to the Xserve and booted from it.

Once loaded, use CCC to copy over all the files from the external to the internal and reboot! Voila!

    Thanks again.
