Bottom line: My diradmin password has changed by itself.

What was going on is this: A PC that used my Panther Server as a PDC didn’t allow me to connect as a Windows domain user, where the PDC hosted the domain. As a troubleshooting step I pulled the PC out of the domain, which required authentication using the diradmin user ID and password. No problem there. Once the PC had rebooted I wanted to rejoin it to the domain. Now the password I had been using for diradmin didn’t work anymore.

What did continue to work was that I could log into the server using the diradmin user ID and password using Screen Sharing and then the server’s login screen. I was also able to change dirdamin’s password on the command line with the passwd command.

What did not work anymore was logging into /ldapv3/127.0.0.1 with “diradmin” and the password. I also wasn’t able to change the password using the Accounts system preference pane, when logged into the Mac OS X session as “diradmin”.

Somehow the Open Directory password for diradmin and the login password for the same user ID have gotten out of sync. How?
