Hey everyone,
So we finally got the funding for a (new) Xserve to match our other underutilized Intel Xserve and an external RAID. I am in the process of migrating our two aging Xserve G5s that handle way too many services each (our ODM handles ODM, DNS, DHCP, AFP, Web, Print, and Windows and our ODR handles ODR, DNS, DHCP, FTP, SUS, Web, and Mail).
I’m pretty comfortable moving over the fileshare and network mounts from our ODM, but mail I think might be a bit trickier (the two Xserve G5s will handle Open Directory, DNS, and DHCP only after the migration).
My strategy for moving mail servers is as follows:
1. Turn off Postfix services on ODR
2. Make the requisite changes to DNS so clients point to the new server
3. Configure mail on the server
4. run mailbfr to rebuild the mail database (I have prepared the dept. manager for downtime for this)
5. Turn on Postfix services for the new server
I have an rsync set up to run nightly to keep the mail store synced to our new storage device to minimize downtime when I finally move the mail server.
What sorts of things do I need to keep in mind? What about MX Records (we host our own in addition to an externally hosted MX). Do I need to just make the requisite changes in DNS? What about the external MX Record?
In WGM, it lists where mail is enabled for each user, does this change automatically once the new server is up and running or is there a manual process to this?
Additionally – to make myself feel better: There are no network home folders or even mobile home folders in use at this time, only a network mounted /Users folder. There shouldn’t be an issue moving that, yes? Any gotchas I should be worried about?
TIA for the advice!
Andrew
