Hi All,
We have a client that is trying to move away from Novell to a straight AD environment. One problem we are running into is moving the data from Novell shares to CIFS shares. Novell allows long file names and non-standard characters. CIFS does not. When we try to move the data, we are using the Transmit FTP client to sync the Novell share to the CIFS share. Transmit will ignore file errors it encounters in the move, but the CIFS share cannot create some of the directories on the Novell share because of illegal characters in the filenames. Does anyone know of a utility to strip illegal characters and/or shorten filenames, or another way to go about this? The data move is being done on OS X 10.4.10, and it’s about 500 GB.
The move needs to be done on a mac as most of the files are mac files, unless we want to zip 500 GB of data first – not truly feasible.
Thanks in advance,
Andrew
P.s. we are alo having this issue at another client wanting to move to SMB hosted home directories for macs, but we can’t move a lot of the home directory info off the mac to the SMB share because of the illegal character issue.
