I’m afraid I’m no genius… actually, pretty much of a noob… and hybrid environment documentation all seems to focus on one idea: co-existance of an AD server and an OD server.
I’m in a home network environment, running XP on my computers, relying on the AD controller (2003 Server) for resource authentication. While I’ve stuck to XP to use design software, all the other users have switched to OS X (some 10.3, some 10.4 users), and the 2003 is getting outdated, so we’re getting rid of the 2003 box, and switching to a G4 running 10.3.9.
My problem is, I’m not going to switch to OS X anytime soon… funding among other reasons, and still need the authentication services supplied by the AD server.
Is there any way I can move this service? I couldn’t care less about home directories, roaming profiles, etc. All I want is the authentication tools.
Thanks for your help!

I’m awfully glad that’s what Primary Domain Controller under Server admin>server name>windows>settings is referring to, but there are so many fields that have no direct match in the 2003 PDC, and obviously a lot more detailed settings on OSXS than the wizard on 2003. I’m assuming the description field is just that and has no real function, the ‘Computer name’ field is it’s DNS name, and the ‘Domain’ field is the name of the domain. However, there are some things I’m hazy on… provided these assumptions are correct. The domain name I want to be the same as my old server’s domain name so I don’t need to make new local profiles on my XP machines. Should the field be ‘olddomainname.local’ or just ‘olddomainname’ ?
The ‘access’ and ‘logging’ pages are pretty self explanatory, but the advanced page is a little more, well, advanced. WINS registration, I’m assuming can and should be left off, the code page field should be left as ‘Latin US (437)’, but what’s the ‘Homes’ option? By default ‘Enable Virtual Share points’ is selected, but what on earth is that?
I’m also assuming that the windows service draws from OD data as far as users go, which seem pretty self explanatory as far as the setup goes, if I leave everything blank in the windows section of the user pane, OSXS shouldn’t do anything when that user logs on to a windows machine, right? Also in the workgroup manager there is ‘Groups’ and ‘Computers’, both of which need no setup if I wish to grant no special resources or permissions to any group of individuals or machine, correct?
Sorry if this is all too elementary for your patience, but thanks.
Quote by: MacTroll[p]You’re looking to use the OSXS PDC?

For a handful of users… you’re probably OK. You’ll have to hand enter the passwords and users, since there’s no real way of exporting from AD and importing into OSXS, but that shouldn’t be a big issue for the size of your network.[/p]
