FireWire? USB? just plug it in and it will mount on the desktop. You can also open Disk Utility to see if it is connected and mount and unmount volumes.

OK, I think I found what i was looking for; autodiskmount. Mostly does the
job, makes the disk avaliable again to Darwin. Have to force quit finder before
it is avalible on the desktop. But this will do.
