Mount Volumes not sharepoints

As an administrator I used to login or connect to a server and mount the volume, however with Mac OS X 10.3.4 Server I just can connect and mount sharepoints. I read it somewhere on the net and tried it successfully, that there is a way to mount volumes from a client computer using the admin login name and password using connect to server command without modifying anything on the server (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107823
) or using Workgroup Manager app. Any help is welcome.
