I’ve got an xServe G5 running 10.4.10 which provides mobile home accounts to my laptop users. Initially I had it setup to perform background home syncs for the mobile users. I’ve since changed the setup to only do login and logout syncs, however I am not convinced that change actually stuck for all machines. Now my issue:

The problem I am having is when my laptop users are remote and connected to our network via the VPN the server will perform the home sync. Obviously speed/bandwidth is an issue here. Basically, I don’t want remote machines to ever sync. Someone at Apple recommended I firewall the VPN machines from accessing mirroragent on the xServe G5 which performs the sync. I’m not sure that is the best solution.

My software VPN users share the same IP pool/range as my local LAN users. If need be, I can change the range to be specific then firewall that range. I don’t want to firewall off AFP, LDAP or other access to the xServe but I do not want mirroragent to fire up for these machines.

Any ideas? Am I making any sense?
