Migration Assistant doesn’t work with InstaDMGs

I use InstaDMG a bit differently than many of the SysAdmins on here. I work at an AASP and I use my output DMG files to restore customer computers with a clean system. The only problem that I have run into is that migration assistant does not work on the initial boot(after you see the movie, you hit “transfer data from another Mac”, etc). What happens is when you start the migration and it reboots the computer in a loop. AFTER the initial boot, the Migration Assistant application works fine, but this is a big problem when a customer gets their computer back and tries to do this on the first boot.

From what I can tell, the problem has been consistent across 10.5 and 10.6 images. Not sure about Lion yet.

Has anyone else run into this problem? Can I fix it somehow?

Have you tried throwing a “networksetup -detectnewhardware” as part of a self-removing first boot script? What have you tried so far?

also try booting in single user mode to check logs on a machine that loops like that. there’s most likely detail in the logs that will help you.

i use instadmg produced images in a similar fashion sometimes and have never had an issue.

I am a pretty light user, I haven’t tried much because I wasn’t sure what to do about it.

Which logs should I be checking?

well the “good” news is that this works fine with a Lion image created with instaDMG with no users and no cleareg
