MCX variable substitution

There are preference manifests for managing Mail and iChat preferences, and some of the entries have default values that include %@ that apparently get substituted for the user’s short name (or long name, depending on the entry). The short name ones aren’t working for me, and Mail and iChat on the clients still have %@@domain.com or some such nonsense. Am I missing something here?
