MCX client pref’s greyed out

We run several client machines under mcx control to prevent client user from making changes. Problem: seem to have lost LDAP bind with server on three machines. Mac addresses don’t appear in account list. and can’t launch “directory access” to re-bind with server (permission denied all users). Most system preferences greyed out. Is there any way to restore without full OSX install ? Many of the system utilities were denied to users, now I seem to be caught in my own security loop. Have re-booted all machines, running server 10.4.8, client 10.4.8 on iMac’s G5’s
