A few weeks ago I completed a project using InstaDMG for about 75% of my OS X 10.5.3 image + some customizations on a new iMac which were captured using NetRestore. It seemed like everything was working with the image until we noticed that on new MacBook Pro’s there is a strange behavior in the Keyboard & Mouse system preference pane. (Does not happen to MacBook Pro’s from last summer.) When you select a tab, instead of really switching, it overlays the choices over the previous selection. See screenshots here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/estherswhite/2688289729/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/estherswhite/2689102138/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/estherswhite/2688289683/

Upon experimentation, I realized that this problem is also present with an 10.5.1 image I made in January of 2008 using NetRestore (no InstaDMG) on an iMac.

The problem is also present when I image a MacBook Pro with the following InstaDMG configuration:

Mac OS X Retail Install DVD + Developer Tools

Apple Updates:
MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.4.pkg
AirPortUtility_Leopard.pkg
iLifeSupport.pkg
iTunes.pkg
QuickTime75Leopard.pkg
JavaForMacOSX10.5Update1.pkg

CustomPKGs:
createUser.pkg
clearReg.pkg

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any ideas about why it could be happening or a fix?

We have had this issue in the past, but not with this panel – we had it when AD bound users tried to add Login Items under the Accounts panel – and usually it would freeze up and become altogether non-responsive. Does it happen with all kinds of users, local and directory? Did you set any keyboard/mouse prefs in your image that may be incorrect?

In this environment, I only have local users, but it does seem to happen in all accounts.
I don’t think it’s a setting in the image since I’m having the same problem with three images (two setup on iMacs, the third a “clean” InstaDMG image) — unless there’s something about the way the updates & Install DVD come together that isn’t good with the MBP — but that seems unlikely to me.

Does the Desktop and Screen Saver Preference Pane work? Unless you tweaked the postflight script in iLifeSupport.pkg, it breaks some things when installed on a non-startup disk, and one might be the Keyboard and Mouse Preference Pane.

I’m realizing that this is probably a problem with the hardware and/or 10.5.4 because I did some tests (installing Mac OS X 10.5 from the install DVD) and getting the same results.

But, to answer your question Patrick, Desktop & Screen Saver Pref Pane is fine.

Weird–I didn’t think there were any Macs out there that couldn’t take a build that was retail 10.5.0 + 10.5.4 Combo. Do you have a moment to install an OS on the “new” MacBook Pros from the OEM disc? What revision and build of OS X is on them?

Apple says (but it might be out of date) that the latest OEM OS shipped is 10.5.2 with the MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro:

Hi,
I got the same issue. What I have found is that if you are imaging a “Multi-Touch” MBP not using his own bundle DVD you will miss the video files that show how to use and configure the multi-touch track-pad, shown on the right side of the panel…the one you see in black.
To solve the issue go to:

1. System > Library > PreferencePane > Keyboard.PrefPane (right-click and show package content) > Content > Resources
2. Check if you have these files:
– Dragging.mov
– DragLock.mov
– Pinch.mov
– Rotate.mov
– ScreenZoom
– Scroll.mov
– SecondaryClick.mov
– SecondaryClickTap.mov
– Swipe.mov
-TapToClick.mov

If you don’t, performe a fresh install of the MT MBP form the Bundle DVD, then locate the files and copy off in a safe place; then re-image the the MT MBP with your InstaDMG and copy back the files to the same location and the issue should be solve.
You can also package the files to be used into the InstaDMG process as a CustomPackage.

Hope this works for you

@Dee
That seems to do the trick!
It took a while to test because both my MacBook Pros were at 10.5.4 so I had to re-install 10.5.0 before the 10.5.2 MBP disc would work.
