In our OD environment we have mostly Leopard Servers set up as replicas but we have a few old Tiger servers that we are using as home directory servers in a few places. Every now and again these servers will loose their connection to the directory and users who have home directories on these servers will not be able to log in until the home directory server is restarted. For example this morning in a particular building the switch that connects this building to our greater network was thoughtfully unplugged. After plugging it back in and getting the network itself back up and running the home directory server didn’t bother to reconnect to the directory, even after about 10 mins of waiting. Once I rebooted it all was right with the world. Not knowing that much about the process itself it seems the home directory server doesn’t continually check to see if the directory it is connected to is available or gives up after a certain point, especially if there might be a high period of latency between it and the directory server. Is there anyway to change these settings or force the server to continually look for its connected directories?
