OS X Server & Client Manager
Western Academy of Beijing (WAB) seeks a creative and dynamic individual who possesses the ability handle a demanding workload but can fluidly switch between projects. We want an individual that takes a work smarter, not harder approach. The person should be able to, take initiative, work to a deadline and communicate effectively in a multicultural environment. Inspired, imaginative, and inventive troubleshooting skills are essential.
The position will report the Director of IT and will directly oversee the school’s twenty plus Xserves, five XRaids, XSAN, and the client deployment system for 1,000 plus Macs. You will be expected to liaise with senior managers and teachers regularly through ad hoc meetings. You will continually monitor and tune systems’ health and work to test/implement new ideas and suggestions. The individual should possess a reasonable knowledge of networks, i.e., switches, wireless and firewalls, as they will be working closely with the network manager.
The candidate needs to possess creativity and an ability to work with the parameters dictated by being an educational institution and have the ability to learn, question assumptions, be able to ask for help, and know how to implement help/solutions when they opportunities present themselves.
About the environment:
• The school is a K-12 English-speaking international school that serves the families expatriate families. There are 1400 students & 180 teachers that represent over 55 nationalities
• It’s an attractive, modern, multi-building campus similar to a small college
• The High & Middle Schools operate on a 1-to-1 laptop model where students own their own machine & have a choice between Mac or PC. 80% are Mac
• There are approximately 1,200 machines on the campus at any given time. The major subgroups include school & student owned
• WAB is Apple’s largest site in China & is considered a “lighthouse” school for AppleRequirements:
• At least three years of hands-on experience managing Mac OS X Server/Client
• Skilled in working with OS X Clients in a multi-platform wireless environment
• Proficient in the administration of Xserve & Xsan
• Adept at working with OS X Server in a multi-platform networked server environment, e.g., MS Windows Server 2003 & Linux
• Ability to automate system administration functions, e.g., using Unix shell scripts, Apple Script, PHP, Perl, Python, launchd, etc.
• Strong knowledge of front-end technologies including HTML, DHTML, JavaScript, CSS, PHP & in-depth experience in web-based application integration
• Experience with the deployment & management of open-source software distributions
• Previous experience with mass-deployment tools such as NetRestore, ASR, DeployStudio, etc.Responsibilities:
• Manage internal web, file, email, DNS, database & collaboration services
• Evaluate, design, & implement solutions on OS X Servers & Client
• Monitor system uptime, resource utilization, & other server health issues for weekly review/analysis
• Support 802.11 networks, access control, security assessment & intrusion detection
• Observe/scan for violations of school’s network policies with tools from 8e6 & other packet capturing tools
• Manage the migration to OS X Server & Client, 10.5 (Leopard), & its collaborative services
• Create/maintain documentation on systems configuration, workflow, network diagrams & instructions
• Manage backup & data recovery to/from the Attempo Server & tape
• Provide mentoring to junior engineers
• Provides tactical & strategic input on overall network planning & related projects
• Evaluates & recommends changes to current & future network requirements to meet the organizations’ needs
• Other duties as requiredEducation and/or experience desired:
The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree and prior experience with working with/for educational institutions. He/she will possess a professional demeanor, excellent work ethic, positive can-do attitude, good interpersonal skills, and be fluent in written and spoken English.
