I have set up OSX server with 160 student users, and am able to login using LDAP as each of the students. I see the home folder ok.

But when I try to open any folder (except Public and Sites) I get permission denied—just like I was in as some kind of guest. When I check the server’s ‘conections’ to see who is logged in, instead of seeing my username logged in (I guess that is what should appear) I see logged in instead. What’s going on?

I experimented (and removed this after) by changing permissions on the user folder on the server, which gave access ok, but then I couldn’t log out from the account and had to reboot the client Mac. I undid that experiment by binning the home folders and recreating them as the permissions couldn’t be undone.

To summarise: I log in successfully as a user from teh client Mac, but the server sees me as a guest!

    Help appreciated!

Yes indeed it did see me only as a guest, no name shown but .

I solved this situation by changing the password type to Encrypt, saving and then back to the normal Open Directory password. At least put it this way: that’s the only thing I did that seemed to make the difference! Does that make any kind of sense? Not to me 🙂
