Hi, we use network home dir’s and when users try to set up login items, it just hangs system preferences.
They can be managed through wgm but it’d be nice if users could do it themselves…

    Running server 10.3.9

    any ideas?

I have the same problem here. I’ve narrowed it down to mount points in the Managed login items (viewed in WGM). For whatever reason they crash the System Preferences->Login Items. However, if I put the same mount point in the “local” login items, it works fine. The only difference between the two is that in WGM the item shows up as a “URL” and locally it shows up as a “Volume”. I’ve verified this on two different machines on the latest version of Tiger.

    Any ideas on this one?

We had exactly the same problem. It is fixed in Tiger server.

Seems like this happens when a Mac is bound to any sort of directory service. OD, AD, LDAP…
My Macs are bound to AD and the exhibit the bad behavior too.

If you right click on an item in the Dock, you can add/remove it from Login Items. That is the workaround I give my users.

10.5.1 does not seem to offer any fix to this problem.
